I’m a sucker for Asian food, especially when the vibe reflects a chill atmosphere moments away from my home. The best hidden gems in Liverpool are always down the side streets.
I review Miss Kittys on Fleet Street in Liverpool City Centre, a Chinese restaurant tucked above Motel entranced by neon lights leading you into a dimly lit restaurant surrounded by blossoms, wooden beams decorated in a ornate old Asian style.
We started our meal off with a complimentary pot of Jasmine tea in a gorgeous white pot, which how now kicked off a true addiction to Jasmine tea, it’s a fantastic appetiser to whet the appetite.
Food was pretty immediate, and so lush chatting away to the waitress, at Miss Kittys they make you really feel like you’re at home and are always so attentive to everything, we ended up spending at least 3 hours sat around talking and enjoying our evening, which to me is incredibly important how welcomed you are in a restaurant and not pushed out.
I ordered some Tiger Shrimp Ramen Soup, whilst Guinny went for Chicken Ramen Soup. It was extremely delicious with plenty of jumping flavours and spices, I’m a big ramen fan and never found a place till now that has fulfilled my ramen cravings outside of my own kitchen. Whilst this was Guins first delve into Ramen-land he couldn’t stop mentioning how much the broth complimented the chilli and helpful serving of chicken.
Accompanying our ramen soup was a Dim Sum Selection of Spring Rolls, Prawn Toast and Sio Mai, which is intended for sharing and presented in a oriental bamboo steamer. The Dim Sung was a delight, an explosion of tastes and textures from spring rolls to yummy parcels of dumplings, they always go down so well. To wash down our delicious food was a selection of cocktails throughout the night.
I started off with a Rose Petal Smash, which was rose vodka, white cranberry juice, grand marnier and rose petals. It was a colourful sweet mixture that looks absolutely gorgeous with a touch of floral femininity. Guinny however had a sore throat which was cured by his Uncle Lee’s Brew cocktail containing Chivas Regal, Green Tea (always a winner!) and Lemon. This luminous green concoction is going to be our go-to at home in cocktail making sessions, giving the benefit of a friday night drink with healing properties, it’s pretty much a win-win but Miss Kittys stormed the cocktails that night.
For our main course we ordered a selection of main courses, they recommend getting 3 to share for 2 people, that hint provided us with the excuse to get a 6 oz Scottish aged fillet steak in soy and molasses, tamarind ‘sweet & sour’ sesame crusted pork fillets with orange marmalade and finally fried Tofu w/cashew nuts in chilli coconut sauce.
The sauces for all are rich and tasty and explore citrus tangs as an after taste creating food with depth of taste. I love tofu an unreal amount so I ended up eating all that to myself whilst Guinny took the steak, the meat falls apart and feels like it’s been slow cooking for hours as its so absorbent of flavours.
Although we didn’t need it with the sheer quantity of food, a side of curry coconut fries, which I highly recommend for nibbles if you’re a lover of curry and chips but done to the highest standard.
Once again accompanies with a new beverage recommended by the waitress, I went for a Hello Kitty (how can you resist the name!) which is Havana 7 Rum Infused With Vanilla, Chocolate Liqueur & Vermouth & Birds Eye Chilli (a word of caution as the chocolate covered chilli is very very very hot, particularly when you eat it in one like I did – a pint of milk later and I was back to enjoying my meal!)
Guinny tried a Hitachino Nest Red Rice beer, a unique tasting strong pale ale, Miss Kittys have big selection of beers for the ale lovers if cocktails don’t float you boat.
We needed a breather between our main and dessert as it was a rather overindulgent Thursday and enjoyed elongating my evening into some fantastic memories, so we followed up our drinks order with a Japanese Garden cocktail; Rose Vodka, Sake, Fuji Apple Juice, Lemon Juice & Ginger and also an Asian Maria; Miss Kittys twist on a Bloody Mary using wasabi. I adore tomato juice and prefer this so much more than a standard Bloody Mary, an extra kick from Wasabi is like no other!
Last but not least (if you have the tummy capacity!) was dessert, I decided on Banana & toffee spring rolls w/ lychee and coconut ice cream, which makes you feel like you’ve been super healthy, a fantastic way to compliment all the flavours and spices and balance out a wasabi Bloody Mary. Guinny had the Strawberry & chocolate fondue w/ sliced sweet ginger which is a must for chocolatiers, expanding our minds to the possibilities of chocolate experiments in our kitchen.
Miss Kittys is the best Asian restaurant in Liverpool City Centre within walking distance of some of the best hidden gems in Liverpool so keep a watchful eye out as it’s a tad easy to walk past Motel on Fleet Street.
