TOP PLACES TO VISIT IN SCOTLAND

Isle of Skye

The Isle of Skye, an incredible island off the northwest coast of the country that has evolved as a very popular tourist destination. During the summer months, Skye is overrun with visitors so booking accommodation and transport should be done in advance. However, if you are able to visit out of season, you will find the local attractions much quieter. Accessible by ferry or bridge, Skye holds many treasures such as Old Man of Storr – a rocky hill on the Trotternish peninsula which makes for a beautiful hike and hosts stunning panoramic views from the top. If you are after a more moderate walk, visit the enchanting fairy pools which are comprised of glistening blue waterfalls and pools that you can swim in if you can brave the cold. The main town on the island, Portree is home to many pubs and restaurants where you can enjoy a cold pint and some local seafood.

Edinburgh

The historic city of Edinburgh is a must when visiting Scotland. It is full of antiquity and culture with ancient buildings that line the scenic streets that the famous Edinburgh Castle looks down on. It is even home to an underground city that is now used for renowned, spooky ghost tours. If you are lucky enough to visit Edinburgh during the month of August, then you are in for a treat. Throughout the month the Edinburgh Fringe Festival takes place. It is the largest arts festival in the world and the city transforms with thousands of comedy and arts performances as well as pop-up bars and food stalls. If you are planning a visit at the time of the festival, be sure to book in advance as accommodation fills up fast. Find somewhere close to all the attractions such as Fraser Suites Edinburgh, which is walking distance to the Royal Mile.

Each night, the castle, which sits proudly at the top of the city, comes to life as the Military Tattoo takes place. This is a series of military tattoos performed by British Armed Forces and international military bands. The ceremony ends with an incredible firework display. During a trip to Scotland, Edinburgh is one city that should not be missed.

Isle of Arran

Another stunning island, Arran is Scotland’s seventh largest island and there is plenty to see and do there. Whether you are an adventure junky or enjoy hillwalking or perhaps just a spot of sightseeing, Arran has it all. Visit the picturesque Sannox Beach made up of pink sand and small dunes or take a trip to Kildonan Castle. There is also an art gallery and lots of adventure sports which you can take part in such as paragliding, sailing, abseiling, fishing, horse riding and more! Arran is also a great place to enjoy a relaxing break with amazing views. Resorts such as the Auchrannie houses a beautiful spa and excellent facilities for a lavish weekend away.

Glasgow

Another gem of a city in Scotland. Glasgow holds its own when it comes to history while perfectly blending the old and the new with its mixture of historic and contemporary culture. Old buildings sit alongside modern buildings bringing past-times and current-times together. Glasgow is known for its excellent arts and music scene with great venues such as the SSE Hydro, the Armadillo and the Royal Concert Hall always hosting an in-demand show. Known for its vibrant nightlife and foodie scene, be sure to grab a meal at Paesanos – a traditional, casual Napoletana pizzeria that serves authentic pizzas that will make you feel like you’re in Italy. Looking for something more upscale? The Gannet located in the trendy West End of the city serves delicious Scottish cuisine and even offer a tasting plate menu.

There is lots to see during a visit to Scotland and the list is endless. However, planning your trip to include a mixture of some cities and islands is a great way to experience different parts of the country and the cultures within each region. Scotland is truly magnificent and radiates beauty from its culture to its scenery, you are guaranteed to have a wonderful time.
