WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW IF YOU HAVE A REPTILE AS A PET

Some people like dogs as pets, some people like cats or rabbits and some like to keep reptiles. You may be thinking to yourself that a pet is a pet, end of story, but keeping a reptile as a pet is totally different to more mainstream pets. More or less everyone knows the basics of taking care of a dog, cat or rabbit but for those who keep, or want to keep any type of reptile, some prior knowledge is absolutely essential. It is important to note, the keeping a reptile as a pet is seen as something as a trend in certain quarters but reptiles have a very long-life span in general so owning one is a massive responsibility and certainly not a fashion statement.  
If you have done your research and you are 100% sure that keeping a reptile as a pet is something you really want to do, there are some important considerations to take into account prior to purchase. It is crucial for you to know the location of a well-regarded and highly experienced Gold Coast bird and exotic animal clinic or a reliable veterinarian at least fairly close by. You have a duty of care towards any pet you own and at very bare minimum you need to make sure specialist veterinary care is on-hand should your pet need it. These vets will also be able to give you general advice about keeping your reptile in optimum condition and should be happy to answer any questions you may have, including local licensing laws.

  • Research – You may have an interest in a particular species, but you should read up carefully on their specific care needs. Some reptiles are much higher maintenance than others. You need to do research as to their nutritional needs and also the type of accommodation needed. Learn about the benefits of feeding silkworms to your pets, many reptile owners choose to feed their pets a diet consisting primarily of live insects. If you fail to do this basic research, perhaps owning a reptile isn’t for you. If you fail to do this basic research, perhaps owning a reptile isn’t for you.
  • Getting Expert Guidance and Advice – Most herpetologists are happy to share their knowledge with fellow reptile owners providing you display the appropriate level of commitment. Your reptile vet can also provide advice on request. 
  • Handling your Reptile – Unless you are experienced, the chances are you will need some advice as to the best way to handle your reptile. Again, herpetologists and your vet should be able to provide some pointers and perhaps show you in person.
  • Make Sure your Hands are Clean – Bearing in mind that reptiles are wild animals with advanced sensory organs, you need to keep your hands clean. Any trace of food on the hands can lead to them biting in the mistaken assumption it’s feeding time. Clean hands also provide a good level of hygiene between you and your reptile. 
  • Keeping Safe – Many reptiles have the potential to be dangerous so care must be taken to ensure the whole family know the basics to avoid harm to the owner and his family and also the reptile itself.
