3 Things You Should Know Rhinoplasty

Are you unhappy with the appearance or functionality of your nose? Rhinoplasty may be the answer. The procedure reshapes your nose to improve its appearance or help you breathe better. It can change various aspects of your nose including its size, the position of your nostrils, and profile. If you have any visible bumps or humps, rhinoplasty can improve their appearance. It can change the appearance of your nasal tips if it is wide or large. Here are three important things to know about cosmetic procedures.

It Presents a Few Risks

Even though rhinoplasty procedures are safe they pose the risk of:

  •   Bleeding
  •   Breathing difficulties/nasal obstruction
  •   The need for future procedures
  •  Anesthesia complications
  • Septal perforations

Knowing about these risks ahead of time will help you prepare and set realistic expectations. According to Hootan Daneshmand, MD, from Silhouette Plastic Surgery Institute, your surgeon will give you tips to minimize the risk of complications. Generally, you have to avoid drinking or eating on the night before your procedure. Avoid drinking or smoking the week before your procedure.

You may also have to discontinue some medications in the weeks or days leading up to your treatment. NSAIDs like ibuprofen, vitamin E, and other vitamins may not be appropriate before treatment.

There Are Different Types of Rhinoplasty

Even though the general purpose of rhinoplasty is to reshape your nose, it isn’t just one general procedure. Different types of rhinoplasty are appropriate for different needs. The basic types of cosmetic surgery are primary, secondary, and filler rhinoplasty. Primary rhinoplasty can be categorized as open or closed.

Open rhinoplasty is one where the surgeon makes incisions on the vertical strip of your skin. They separate your nostrils for major reshaping. They elevate the soft tissues and skin off underlying structures making it possible to view the nasal anatomy.

Closed rhinoplasty is appropriate for minor reshaping procedures. Your surgeon will make an incision within your nose and separate the skin from the cartilage and bones. It is then possible to rearrange, reshape, or augment your nose to achieve the desired shape.

Secondary rhinoplasty, also known as revision rhinoplasty, is appropriate for correcting persistent problems after a previous rhinoplasty procedure, and those problems range from minor to life-threatening.

Filler rhinoplasty is performed with the use of injectable fillers. They are great for smoothing out sharp angles, filling depressions, and restoring symmetry. They can make your nose more attractive. The most commonly used tissue fillers include Radiesse, Juvederm, and Restylane.

Recovery Is Fast

After your rhinoplasty procedure, you may be anxious or excited to see the results. Fortunately, you don’t need to wait too long. Even though the full results are only visible after a year, you can start breathing through the treated nose in 24 hours. You can get off pain medication in just 48 hours.

In the first few days after your treatment, you may experience light bleeding. However, it goes away fast. After seven days, the splint or cast can be removed. About 85 percent of the swelling will go down in a month.

If you have any questions or concerns about rhinoplasty, speak with your surgeon about them ahead of time. They will help you understand and set the right expectations.
