We’ve all seen those posts online asking ‘what’s stopping you from travelling?’, and for the majority of people, the answer is usually ‘money’. There are ways you can travel cheaply, but if you don’t fancy taking the train, bussing or working whilst travelling, it can be pretty expensive affair.
Most people who want to travel hold down full time jobs and have external responsibilities that drain much of their travel fund, but we’ve put together a list of tips that you can use to supplement your income so you can travel more – without having to work whilst doing it!
Freelance Work
Whether you work in finance, TV, publishing or graphic design, there’s almost always the possibility for you to earn a bit extra by engaging in freelance work. You might have thought about doing it but stopped because it wasn’t clear how to actually get started. Well, ponder no more! There are a number of freelance websites where you can set up a profile and bid on projects or be approached by clients without having to actually network. This means almost anyone can find work as a freelancer.
The trick is to bargain for repeat work and carefully coax the client off the website. You have to be mindful that most freelance websites do not allow you to take transactions off of their platform, so you have to be extra careful how you word it. The reason you should try and get clients off of freelance platforms is because although they’re okay, such websites typically take a huge amount in fees, so you could lose $10 before you’ve even started purely for admin and conversion rates.
If successful, you can supplement your income nicely through freelancing. Be careful not to overdo it though, especially if you already have a full time job. You don’t want to burn out.
Rent Out a Space
If you have a second home or property, the obvious way to supplement your travel fund is to rent it out. If you don’t want to go into the legalities of renting to actual tenants, consider posting your property on a holiday let site. Much like freelancing sites, you will have to pay fees, but it’s a nice way to earn a bit of extra cash.
If you don’t have the luxury of a second home, think about renting your house as a film location or photography project. There are a number of online websites you can submit your home onto. Media scouts will check said sites to find a suitable location for their project, and if your property is picked, you’ll be paid for it. This is a great option, but you will need to ensure your home is kept in a tidy condition and that you’re able to carry out the duties stated in the terms of your rental.
Tutor
Odds are, you have a skill that someone else would like to learn. Think about becoming a tutor and setting your own rates to teach people your skill. This is slightly different to freelancing, but it can yield a good income on the side. Whether you sign up to teach someone your native language or a musical instrument, there will more than likely be someone in your local area you can teach something to. Post an ad in your local Facebook group or in the newspaper and see what happens!
To be credible, we’d recommend you gain relevant qualifications. Whether this is a degree or a vocational certification, most people won’t just take your word for it. For a small fee you can gain qualifications that will make people trust you. You could easily earn your money back when you start gaining clients, so this is well worth it. From teaching people to drive as a side hustle to teaching people to swim, the opportunities to tutor are endless, plus, it’s exceptionally fulfilling.
