Female Solo Travel: The Best Places to Visit in Asia

Once upon a time, female solo travel through most of Asia wasn’t the safest proposition in the world. Fortunately, those days are long gone and, with a few notable exceptions, women alone can visit the vast majority of countries located on the continent. And with Covid-19 restrictions being lifted across the globe, albeit slowly, many are packing their bags for their first post-pandemic journey. IF you are one of them, here are a few suggestions for the best places to visit in Asia.

Singapore

We will start with one of the more traditional destinations, Singapore. The former British colony has a lot to offer in terms of historical sites and cultural immersion. The best part is that it is one of the safest places on the planet, thanks to rigorous laws and fierce law enforcement. The city boasts one of the best public transport systems in the world and if that doesn’t work for you, it is quite safe walking after dark. That means you don’t have to worry about getting back to your hotel after a night out in one of many clubs.

Thailand

For decades, Thailand has been one of the most popular tourist destinations in all of Asia, especially for Western visitors. The country and the people are extremely hospitable and will gladly go out of their way to help you in any way they can. You can check out Big Booty Fish for a detailed list of destinations, but whichever you choose, you won’t be disappointed. With amazing beaches and stunning views, Thailand is a wonderful place to visit.

Hoi An, Vietnam

Hoi An, one of Vietnam’s premier tourist spots, is a perfect blend of ancient Vietnam, French colonial buildings, and modern architecture, all located on a beautiful central coast. Beaches and the city’s surroundings will provide perfect daytime entertainment, while vibrant nightlife will keep you awake. If you are a foodie, Vietnamese cuisine is yet another reason why Hoi An is a must-see. Make sure you dress conservatively when visiting local temples, as locals care greatly about their traditions and this is the fastest way to offend them.

Istanbul, Turkey

Technically not in Asia, but on a European side of the Bosporus, Istanbul is nevertheless a magic destination. Despite its location, the city has a distinct oriental feel, with plenty of modern European features thrown in for good measure. Once known as the city of men’s desires, women can have as much fun in it these days. Turkey as a country and especially Istanbul are fairly secular and strict norms that apply to women in some other countries aren’t observed here. Istanbul is a massive city, with more than 15 million people and a very rich history. The only issue is that you will need several visits to just scratch the surface of what it has to offer.

Sri Lanka

Not so long ago, Sri Lanka was ravaged by civil war and terrorist attacks. Fortunately, peace has arrived on the island and its beauty is slowly transforming it into one of Asia’s premier tourist destinations. People are extremely hospitable and you can choose from more urban experiences in Colombo and visiting the island’s interior, which we would highly recommend. Riding along the Nuwara Eliya railroad is one of the most beautiful experiences you can have.

Tokyo, Japan

Tokyo is probably the best city in the world for foodies. It has absolutely everything you can imagine. And the best thing, nobody will bat an eye at a woman dining alone. In fact, it is a norm here, as most people eat alone in restaurants. To make things even better, it is a great way of meeting new people, if you so desire.
