You know it’s summertime when the snags are on the barbie, the beers are in the chilly bin, the kids are playing cricket, and the parents are in the pool. Summer is all about those long hot days of outdoors fun with family and friends that always slowly turn into warm evenings under the stars.

But if your backyard isn’t up to scratch after the freezing chill of winter, you’ll need to put some work in before the warmer weather hits. Here are some tips to get your outdoor space ready for the hot summer ahead.

Scrub the BBQ

First things first, you need to give your BBQ a good clean before summer. While you don’t have to wait for the silly season to fire up your grill, there’s just something about having a barbecue in warmer weather.

Looking after your grill-top means keeping it clean so that when you’re ready to cook up a storm, she’s ready to fire up good. Cleaning it shouldn’t take too long, and it certainly doesn’t have to sparkle like new. But everything you cook will taste much better without the lingering flavour of last year’s burgers. And don’t forget to fill the gas bottles!

Clean the pool

Start getting your swimming pool ready now by checking pool chemicals and cleaning out any leaves. Don’t have a pool? Well, you’ve still got time to get one because peak season for pool builders is during the summer.

The best part about getting a pool installed in winter is that it’ll be completed before the weather heats up! That means as soon as it’s done, you can start thinking about entertaining guests poolside and taking advantage of the cool blue water. Even the smallest backyard can have a Narellan pool installed too.

Wash the deck

You need to wash all of the winter away before you can really start basking in the summer sun. Start by sweeping all the dirt from your back patio deck, and then use a power washer to spray away all of the remaining debris. And give the side of your home and driveway a good spray too.

If you don’t own a power washer and none of your neighbours does either, you can rent one relatively cheaply from a hardware store. When you’re done, create the right mood with some outdoor lights and candles. And make sure your back porch is always as comfy as possible with ample seating, good lighting, and a throw rug just in case evenings get a little chilly.

Upgrade the furniture

Speaking of outdoor furniture, if yours is looking a little worse for wear, maybe it’s time for a sneaky upgrade. If you can’t afford brand new, stop by your local second-hand store for some pre-loved and lightly used sets for a fraction of the cost.

Or at least give your current patio furniture a little bit of a facelift when it comes out of hibernation by replacing or recovering the outdated or ripped cushions. At the very least you’ll need to clean all the outdoor furniture, deck chairs, and throw a cloth over the table.

Stock the supplies

The secret to ensuring a stress-free summer is planning. You can also save a little money by stocking up on supplies before summer comes around. You should have all the summer essentials handy like sunblock, tanning cream, aloe vera, and insect repellent, but you’ll also need to have plenty of fluffy beach towels, clean cooking utensils, and maybe a lawn bowling set. Don’t forget to defrost your freezer so you can fill it with food, treats, and bags of ice.

Wash out your chilly bin ready for all those summer beverages. And make sure that your blender still works and is ready for poolside margaritas. Just by being organized in advance means your summertime will be full of fun and enjoyment, rather than running around for your guests. Summer is all about enjoying yourself too, remember.
