Mattress Toppers – 3 Advantages That We Overlook

When it comes to mattress toppers, people often tend to overlook their importance. More often than not, people simply buy a mattress topper, thinking it’ll instantly make their mattress more comfortable or make up for the things their mattress is missing.

In reality, unfortunately, it’s not that simple. You have to know both your mattresses and your mattress toppers if you want to find the perfect match.

To do that, you need to understand the differences between mattress toppers, what each type brings to the table and more importantly, you need to understand what advantages they offer, in general.

What are mattress toppers?

To put it simply, a mattress topper is a layer that lies on top of your mattress so that you can get a good night’s sleep.

Now, a mattress topper isn’t a quick fix for your old, bad mattress. To be fair, it will make a world of difference, especially if your mattress isn’t that good, but you should never consider a topper a fix. Instead, look at it as an improvement.

If your mattress is soft and non-supportive, a firmer mattress topper could help you sleep better and vice versa.

As expected, not every mattress topper is the same. They can be made from various materials and fillings. Depending on the material, the features of the topper vary. Learn more about the best and the more popular mattress toppers here.

What are the different types of mattress toppers?

Depending on the filling material, a mattress topper will be either soft or firm, cool or warm, heavy or lightweight and so on.

The most common materials used as fillings for mattress toppers are memory foam, memory foam gel, feather and down, latex and hollowfibre and microfibre.

Memory foam

Memory foam mattress toppers are one of the most popular options. They bring the utmost comfort, pain and pressure relief and some great contouring and motion isolation. Any firm mattress could benefit from a memory foam mattress topper.

The only real drawback is that memory foam toppers tend to get hot, so if you sleep hot, you should consider some of the other ones.

Gel memory foam

Gel memory foam mattress toppers are virtually the same as memory foam mattresses, only with an added bonus. They have all the same features as a regular memory foam topper. They keep you comfortable, they alleviate pressure and pain, they contour around your body nicely and if you sleep with a partner – they do a great job of isolating movement.

But, what they do better is temperature regulation. Gel-infused foams are much better at dissipating heat and air circulation.

Feather & down

If you’re looking at something purely comfortable, you can go for a feather & down mattress topper. On top of being extra comfortable, feather and down toppers are also quite cool and breathable. They’re also very lightweight and they don’t restrict movement.

On the other hand, they’re hard to keep clean and aren’t hypoallergenic, so, keep that in mind if you try and get one.

Latex

If you’re in the market for a long-lasting, durable topper – latex it is. Latex is a naturally hypoallergenic material that is also great and contouring and alleviating pressure, similar to memory foam. Although, it is a bit on the firmer side, so keep that in mind.

Compared to the rest of the toppers, latex ones are one of the most expensive and hardest to clean.

Hollowfibre & Microfibre

Hollowfibre & microfiber mattress toppers are the most affordable option out of all. They’re made from synthetic materials, they’re quite lightweight, comfortable and very breathable: Also, they do quite a good job at alleviating pressure and pain, but they do tend to struggle with durability.

What are the advantages of mattress toppers?

As we’ve previously said, mattress toppers bring many benefits to your bedroom. Here are a few words on the three main advantages.

Extended lifespan of a mattress

A mattress will usually last you anywhere from 6 to 9 years, depending on the type or quality of the mattress. Now, with a high-quality mattress topper, you can add a year or two to your mattress’ lifespan.

A topper will take the load off of the mattress, making it last a lot longer. An additional few centimetres of memory foam, latex or feather and down will take the most wear and tear during the years, so your mattress would stay in perfect shape for longer.

Increased comfort

The most obvious benefit of using a soft mattress topper is the extra comfort. Keep in mind, a topper won’t do much if your mattress is in a really bad shape, but if it’s just a matter of making things better – a topper is always a great choice.

Comfort isn’t simply about firmness. Therefore, you should always choose a topper based on what your mattress is lacking. For instance, if you need to make it cooler and softer – get a feather and down topper. On the other hand, if your mattress lacks some support – go for a latex one.

Keeping your mattress clean and fresh

Finally, if you just need something to keep your mattress clean and fresh, you can get a topper.

Not every mattress comes with a removable cover, so it might be hard to keep clean. But, if you put an additional layer on top of it – you eliminate the need for cleaning the mattress so often.

On the other hand, most toppers come with removable covers and some of them are even machine washable, so you won’t have to worry about professionally cleaning your mattress.
