Alaska is an experience like no other. The serene beauty and truly wild nature of the state makes it one of the most special places in the world to visit. There’s so much to do! Here are experiences you need to have in Alaska.

Traveling the State

Traveling to and around Alaska can be an experience in and of itself. There are areas that you can only get to by boat. There are other areas that it’s much easier to get to by snowmobile. An airplane tour of the state is another great option to really get a view of the vast beauty.

To get to Alaska, you can fly, drive or boat. Most people opt to fly. Alaskan cruises are also a great option, as you get to see a great selection of what the state has to offer without having to think through the logistics of flying and driving.

Take a Boat Ride

Once you’re in Alaska, you’ll definitely want to take a boat ride. By boat, you can experience the beautiful shoreline. You can also visit local islands for an incredible and beautiful experience.

Another great activity by boat, you’ll want to try deep sea fishing in Alaska. You’ll have the opportunity to catch your dinner. This will be some of the best seafood you could possibly eat.

Take a Plane Ride

Like boat rides, plane rides are a great way to experience the vast wilderness of The Great Alone. Whether you’re taking a plane to get from Anchorage to an island, or simply touring the state by plane, you’re guaranteed to see some great views. Plane is a great way to see sites that you wouldn’t get to otherwise, especially in the very wild areas of the state.

Outdoorsy Activities

Alaska is a great place to take part in outdoor sports, like hiking and kayaking. These are great summer sports. Both give you opportunities to breathe in the fresh air and really experience the natural wild of Alaska.

In the fall, winter and early spring, activities like snowshoeing and ice fishing can be a lot of fun. Both give you opportunities to enjoy the cold, stark beauty of the state. These can be especially fun in the spring, when nature is just waking up from the long winter.

See the Northern Lights

If you’re visiting during the colder months, you’ve got the potential to see the northern lights. The northern lights are beautiful and well worth the trip. Experience them outside the cities and in the darker months if you can. They’re still visible at other times, but the midnight sun and light pollution both make them harder to see. They can be seen anywhere in the state, but it’s easiest to see them in interior or arctic regions.

Visit Anchorage

Anchorage is a really fantastic city well worth a visit while you’re in the state. Anchorage is the largest city in the state and is known for its cultural attractions. Visit the Alaska Native Heritage Center while in town. The city is also a great access point for nearby wilderness areas and mountain ranges.

Eat Local Faire

Though Alaska might not be the first place you think of when considering places to go for the food, you will get to experience some of the most delicious and fresh food while visiting. Have fresh Alaskan salmon, caught that day by a local fisherman. There are so many varieties to try, including pink, Coho, sockeye and chum. Not to mention the other fresh fish, like halibut and rockfish. You can also enjoy crab, shrimp and scallops.

Eat meat that’s native to the area as well. You can even try reindeer. Moose, deer, caribou and sheep are all options that locals eat. Don’t be afraid to eat like a native if you get the chance.

There’s just so much to do in The Last Frontier. Whether you visit during the summer or winter, you’re sure to have a thrilling experience like no other.
