How to Create the Perfect Messy Bun

Did you know that the bun hairstyle dates back to Ancient Greece? It was typically adorned with jewelry and was a status symbol for upper-class women.

Fast forward to 2021, and it’s just as popular. Not only is it elegant, but it’s also a great way to keep your hair out of your face.

Is that the look you’re going for? Want to learn how to create the perfect messy bun? If so, you’re at the right place.

We’ll be going over the step-by-step instructions below. Keep reading for everything that you need to know!

Step One: Put Your Hair up in a Ponytail

Use a soft brush to comb through your hair (you can also use your fingers). Bring your hair up into a ponytail at the back or to the side of your head and secure it with an elastic; it should feel secure but not overly tight.

For the best results, use a hair-tie without a metal clasp (something like these Kooshoo hair ties)—it’ll reduce the chance of hair damage.

Tip: Consider wearing the elastic on your wrist. That way, you won’t have to reach for it after gathering your hair, which will make things easier.

Step Two: Bring the Bun Up

Twirl your ponytail with your fingers and wrap the end under the elastic. To make the bun bigger, pull your hair further through the hair tie; you can widen its radius by pulling the edges out to the sides. Tugging the center of the loop will also give it more of a ‘U’ shape.

For a messier look, let some of the strands fall through. Tuck any unwanted strands back into the elastic. If you want, you can also pin them in place with a bobby pin.

To add more volume, run your fingers through the front and loosen your hair from the hair tie.

Step 3: Add the Finishing Touches

Gently smooth your hair back over the crown of your head. You can also brush the edges to make it look less messy.

Apply a small amount of hairspray if you plan on wearing the bun for more than a couple of hours—it’ll help create volume and keep your hair in place. For the best results, hold the spray nozzle at least 12 inches away from your hair and spray in a continuous motion.

When you’re finished, you can accentuate the bun with accessories such as a headband, hairpin, or clip.
