Ways to keep your car in good health

With the cost of living still a pressing concern, keeping your car in superb condition is more important than ever. While passing your MOT is vital, it’s also essential to lower the chances of unexpected breakdowns that could leave you stranded on the motorway.

Staying on top of basic tasks can save you from both hassle and potentially costly repairs. Let’s face it, none of us want to see our hard-earned money going into an avoidable garage visit. With that in mind, here are some tips to help.

  • Maintenance and inspections

Frequent servicing is critical to uphold performance and stop minor issues from becoming major headaches. Ideally, you should be following the manufacturer-recommended schedule, which includes brake checks and air filter replacements.

In the UK, your motor must pass its MOT every year if it’s over three years old. It can be easy to forget this test but skipping it could land you a fine and invalidate your insurance. The great news is that arranging one is simple, as you can book an MOT online and make the process convenient.

  • Assess your fluids

You wouldn’t expect your body to run without liquids, and the same applies to your car. Topping up the likes of oil, coolant and brake fluid can prevent long-term damage.

Oil is particularly crucial, as it can ensure your engine is lubricated and running smoothly. Low levels of this element can lead to mechanical failure, and you can check this using the dipstick under the bonnet.

Remember to watch your coolant carefully too, especially as the colder months roll in. Proper amounts of this is key for temperature regulation, and a lack of it could cause overheating.

  • Preserve tyre health

Some experts claim that one in five drivers have never examined their tyres. However, they are the only parts of your vehicle that actually touch the road, so it’s worth keeping them in good nick.

Their health isn’t just about legal requirements, it’s also about safety, fuel efficiency and handling. The UK’s minimum tread depth is 1.6mm, but it’s often advised to invest in a fresh set when it reaches 3mm for optimum grip. Use the 20p test to measure this; insert the coin into the tread and if you can see the outer edge of it, it’s time for new ones.

  • Clean it

A clean vehicle is a happy one, and regularly washing the exterior can stop rust and corrosion. Pay extra attention to the underside, where dirt tends to accumulate unnoticed. Additionally, polished windows, mirrors and headlights can improve visibility and safety.

Maintain tidiness inside as well to reduce wear and tear on seats, carpets and controls. Hoovering thoroughly can also help keep allergens at bay if you suffer from hay fever.
