If you’re a digital nomad, working online while you move from place to place, then cybersecurity should always be a major focus. Without a secure internet connection, your income can get disrupted or even stolen. 

To ensure you’re always protected while working online, here are a few cybersecurity tips that every digital nomad should follow. 

Secure your internet connection

The most important tip is that your internet connection must be secure. Public WiFi networks can expose your data or even be fake points set up by scammers in the first place. In either case, it’s very easy for others monitoring the access point to get a copy of everything you access, including your emails and banking information. 

Of course, there are two main ways around this. One option is to rely on your 4G/5G network or a travel internet connection. This will give you all the benefits of a private connection, but it can be an expensive option. 

Alternatively, you can use a VPN. A VPN, or Virtual Private Network, is like a digital router that encrypts your data, protecting it from others. While many use VPNs to get around geo-locked content, its primary use is to ensure that your data is safe and secure. VPNs have also become increasingly affordable, making them the perfect option if you regularly encounter unprotected WiFi networks. 

Implement strong authentication measures

The stronger your password and authentication measures, the more secure your account. Of course, it doesn’t matter how good your password is if you have to write it down. Pieces of paper that list your passwords pose a massive security breach, and this can quickly cause many issues, especially if you reuse your passwords. 

If you have trouble remembering your long and complicated passwords, using a password manager is a safe, secure way to store and manage your credentials for a variety of websites. Typically, they use additional authentication methods to prevent unauthorized access, further enhancing their security. 

We also recommend enabling Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) wherever possible. This security measure uses your phone number, an email address, or a dedicated app to provide unique codes to access your account. These additional security measures are an absolute must, as they can keep your account safe, even if your password becomes compromised.

Finally, you should stay up to date on the latest regulations. The UK has many strict laws and regulations governing the use of data, with various data protection acts. Additionally, there is a forthcoming Cyber Security and Resilience Bill, which is designed to bolster online defences and protect the public.
