If you are looking forward to travelling in 2021, you aren’t alone! Many of us had to cancel trips abroad in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, and are counting down the days until we can go on holiday once again. Planning a trip is such an exciting prospect, and there are so many aspects that need to come together in order for the trip to be successful.

One thing that many people um-and-ah about when planning to go travelling is dating. Dating is a part of being young, free and single, and we should all be free to do it as we please. Yet there are many factors to dating while abroad that require careful consideration. Let’s explore some of the do’s and don’ts of dating while abroad!

Do’s!

Firstly, there’s nothing wrong with dating while you are away. If you do so with care and caution, there shouldn’t be a problem. Here are the top three things you should always do if dating someone you meet abroad!

Meet in a public place. There are plenty of places to meet up in popular holiday destinations around the world, and meeting in public is always safest. This allows you to spend time with the person without putting yourself at any risk.

Use the time to explore! Don’t compromise your holiday time for spending time with a date – do both! If you’re struggling for ideas, take a look at some date ideas in Melbourne or conduct a quick Google search for the area you’re in.

Tell a friend where you are going and keep in touch with them. This is very important to assure that if anything unexpected happens, somebody else knows your whereabouts. It’s better to be safe than to be sorry!

Don’ts!

Let’s dive straight into some of the no-go areas of dating while abroad. In a perfect world it would be fine to let our hair down and go with the flow, but unfortunately we need to be safe in the dating world, especially when away from our home country.

Never meet someone for the first time in a private space. If you meet somebody on Tinder or another dating app, always meet them in a group of friends before you are alone with them. This is to ensure they are who they say they are, and to gauge how much you can trust them.

Don’t go anywhere without notifying a friend. This could be a simple text – ‘We’re heading to the pub on Regent Street, see you later!’ – and it will make all the difference.

Don’t second-guess your instinct. Our gut instincts are very powerful, and they often tell us if something doesn’t feel right. If your instinct is telling you something is off about the person or situation, make sure to follow it. Don’t ignore what your gut is telling you!

Dating is a fun experience that shouldn’t be missed out on. Use these helpful tips to ensure you are safe and happy when you are dating people you meet abroad!
