Preparing Your Garden For The Winter Season

When it comes to your garden, this might be something that you take a lot of pride in during the summer and spring months. Having said that, when the winter months hit, there is less that you can do here. Things don’t grow as fast in the winter so the upkeep for the space is going to decline in need, and as well as this you’re also not going to be able to use it as much as you do during the warmer months.

As this is the case, you need to take some time to get the garden ready for when the colder season starts to hit. Obviously you don’t want to do this too early or it defeats the object, but you have to make sure that you are doing it. That’s what we’re going to be taking a look at in this article, so if you would like to know more, feel free to read on.

Last Load Of Maintenance

The first thing that we’re going to say is that you should complete the last load of maintenance jobs that need doing before the cold hits. This is going to include cutting your grass to a short length, getting an edger to complete the edging of the garden, pulling out any weeds that you see, cutting back any trees and so much more. During the winter months, due to the harsh conditions things like this don’t grow the same way that they do in summer and spring, so you’re pretty much safe until then. However, there may be a few times where you have to go out there and pull out some weeds to keep the garden looking fresh.

During the cold season, you will find that maintaining your garden is one of the easiest things that you will ever do. If you can just get your head around your tasks being a little different, then that’s going to help a lot.

Put Furniture Away

If you have any outdoor furniture, then it’s a good idea to put it away for the winter months. We know that there are some people who don’t really care too much about their furniture and leave it out, but due to the elements it’s not going to look very good when spring rolls round again. Now, of course you have the option to repaint and restore it yourself, but it’s a lot of work when you can just put it away.

It might be the case that you are hesitant to do this because you don’t have a shed. You can purchase a small one that will fit into your garden out of the way if this is the problem. Or, if you have an attic that has room, there is no reason you can’t store it up there. Either way, to keep it in the best possible condition, it needs to be put away and kept safe from the elements.

Get Any Painting Done

If there is any painting that needs to be completed on the exterior of your home, then we strongly recommend you get that sorted as soon as possible. You can do this yourself without too much hassle as long as you buy the right primer, the right paint, and the right sealant. You cannot forget the sealant, especially with the weather going to take a turn for the worse.

If you are expecting a lot of rain, then it’s imperative that you seal the coat of paint a couple of times to help it stay strong through to the warmer months once more. It’s a fair amount of work, and you can always hire someone to take on the task for you if you think that it’s going to take too much time.

Flowers May Not Survive

It’s important to note that during the cold season, there are a lot of flowers that you may have been growing in the summer that are not going to make it through this time. You can save the ones that you can save, and you can bring some of them inside if they are potted to save them from the harsh weather. Having said that though, most of your flowers are going to die during the winter months and you have to be ready for that.

As you notice this happening, you need to get out there and get rid of them. Just because it’s winter, doesn’t mean that you want to have dead flowers scattered all over your garden. Ensure that you are keeping your eye out for these, and take comfort in the fact that when spring comes around again, you can have some more flowers.

Finish Any Projects

Finally, if you have any projects that you have started in your backyard that you actually want to finish, now is the time to do this. You can’t just leave half finished projects all over the place, as it’s likely that they won’t be in the same condition that you left them in by the time that you return to them in a few months time. There is absolutely no way that you are going to be heading out into your garden and doing any kind of DIY work when the rain and storms are coming down. If you have a workshop though, it might happen. Most people don’t have one of these at the moment, and therefore you just need to get it done before you can’t any longer.

An example of this would be if you were laying a patio or decking, or building some kind of garden wall.

We hope that you have found this article helpful, and now see some of the things that you should be doing to prepare your garden for the winter season. It’s not just a case of not having to do anything for a few months, you have to get everything sorted before this can happen. We wish you the very best of luck, and hope that you manage to get everything ready before the cold weather hits.
