Our guide to looking after your mental health

Looking after your mental health should be one of your top priorities. Over the years, more research has been put into mental health, with discoveries proving how important it is and arguably, that it’s the most important aspect of your life.

When your mental health is doing well, you’ll find yourself feeling happier, your confidence will be higher and life in general will be a lot easier. When it’s low, your emotions will feel sadder and you may find a lot of situations feeling negative – unfortunately, throughout life, you will have your ups and downs.

When in your down period, this is when it’s most important you make changes to your daily routines. And these changes could include looking after your diet, getting more sleep, cutting out negative habits, such as drinking or smoking (Zyn snus could help with this) and exercising more.

To help give you some inspiration, keep on reading for our top tips on looking after your mental health.

Look after your physical health

When it comes to looking after your mental health, sometimes the first place you need to look is at your physical health. When you are looking after yourself, you will find your mind also is in a better place. Try to find an exercise class that you enjoy, such as body pump, yoga or pilates. You could try running – perhaps bringing a friend along – or you could join a club such as netball or football. If you don’t have the time to get out of the house, want to save money, or don’t have a facility near you, you could look into doing classes at home using sites like YouTube to follow workouts.

Speak to someone you know and trust

If you find that your mental health is declining and you are feeling anxious or depressed, turn to someone you know and trust and tell them how you feel. They say that a problem shared is a problem halved and your loved one might be able to give you a different perspective on the thing you’re worried about and offer some advice. This can help you to get through the tough time and show you have people there to support you as well.

Find joy in the things you love to do

If you find everything is getting a little much, ensure you carve time out to do what you love. You could want to go and visit a spa for example, where you can have a massage or just spend time by yourself, in peace, enjoying the surroundings and being away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. You could take yourself off to read a book in your garden, have a bath, or go to the gym. Whatever it is you love, make sure you find time to do it.

See if you can get to the root of the problem

Sometimes your mental health can be caused by something going on in your life and it’s vital you get to the root cause of this in order to come out the other side. Look to see when the bad feelings started and if there was something that happened at the same time. Did something happen to a friend or family member? Did you lose a job or perhaps miss out on a promotion? Sometimes there’s an obvious cause and sometimes there isn’t, so it can be worth speaking to a professional who might be able to help you dig a little deeper.

Cut out any negative habits

Over time, bad habits can creep into your daily routine which can be negative to your mental health. For example, it’s well known that smoking can affect your mental health in a bad way. Binge drinking can also affect your mental health and so can drugs. Certain bad habits, such as drinking can be done in moderation, but other habits like taking drugs, should be cut out completely.

There are so many different ways to look after your mental health, the above is just a touch on the top methods. What works for you, may not work for someone else, therefore it’s important you try various methods to see which is most successful.
